Narbonne in modern times

Narbonne underwent a new era of expansion with the rise of the wine making industry, which itself was given a huge boost with the arrival of the railway in the middle of the 19th century. Narbonne became a real Eldorado right up until the economic crisis of 1907. The town developed wide shady boulevards along the ramparts, with beautiful town houses for the prosperous merchants, along the Canal de la Robine. Some have Parisian school architecture and others are more fantasist in style. The indoor market building with its Baltard architecture, is  one of the most remarkable in France.

20th century architecture is not to be outdone: the Palais du Travail, an example of concrete archuitecture with its pure lines, the Médiathèque and the Palais de justice, not forgetting the Art Déco facades in many hidden and peacefull sidestreets.

A visit presenting the wide range of  architectural styles from the 19th and 20th centuries can be organised on request.
